Description

Metal Halide bulbs are an excellent value. They provide high quality light in the spectrum your corals need at a price that is much lower than other bulbs on the market. We have tried all of the color temperatures on our tanks and the one we are most impressed with is the 20K. The 20K bulbs provide a crisp-white with a strong blue tint. This color combination brings out the fluorescent pigments in corals nicely. We found that it will appear more blue using a magnetic ballast or a pulse start ballast. Other color temperatures look just as good if not better than more expensive bulbs. 15K bulbs and 20K bulbs should not need supplemental fluorescent actinic lighting. Please note that the XM 250W 20K bulb and XM 175W 15K bulb require an electronic ballast or a HQI ballast to function properly.

Tech Notes

Special Note: Metal halide bulbs have a rated life of several years, however the lumens (amount of light) decrease and the color spectrum deteriorate before the eye can detect any changes. In order to maintain the health of your tank inhabitants, experts recommend changing metal halide bulbs every 9-12 months; based on average usage of 8 hours per day.
